Painful Sex: Cognitive Behaviour Group Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioural Group Therapy for Painful Sex is a scientifically-based treatment program for women and gender diverse individuals experiencing pain during sexual activity. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) focuses on how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours influence your pain and sexuality. CBT is an active therapy. Therefore, you will be asked to complete at-home exercises to help you practice the skills you learn in the group sessions.

Sessions topics include:

  • Education about conditions that cause painful intercourse
  • Tools to reduce pain and its negative impact on your life
  • Material to facilitate the experience of sexual desire and arousal
  • Skills training on communication with your romantic/sexual partners
  • Help with restoring sexual pleasure and intimacy

This program will be facilitated by Dr. Natalie Rosen. Dr. Rosen has over 20 years of experience treating painful sex, including developing and testing many of the treatment techniques used in this program. Dr. Rosen is a Professor of Psychology and Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Dalhousie University and a Registered Clinical Psychologist who specializes in sex and couple therapy. Ainsley Lofstedt, Candidate Register Psychologist, will also assist with facilitating the sessions. She has completed an intensive sex therapy program through Guelph University and is currently training in sex therapy under Dr. Rosen’s supervision.

When? The treatment consists of 10 weekly 1.5-hour sessions. The last 2 sessions are typically spaced out every 2 weeks. We are planning to start the group the first week of March. It will be held in the early evening, likely starting at 5:30 or 6pm (TBD).

Program Fees: The fee for this program is $1200 (which works out to $120/session and is less than 50% of the cost of individual therapy). Payment via credit card is due on the first day of treatment and will be paid through our secure payment system. You will be provided a receipt for your records and to be submitted to private insurance.
